Maria’s Comet 1847 vi is a short film by Homa Taj (IMDb) based on a biographical poem written by Irish-born poet, Frank J Cunningham. The former New Yorker (Southampton, LI), and long-time Nantucket resident was inspired by his friendship with a young native islander whom he met via Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. The poem recounts the ways Ryan Webb (played by Skyler Kardell) became inspired by a visit to the Maria Mitchell Association’s Loines Observatory with his ‘Big Brother’, the poet Cunningham. Ryan is now a professional surfer.
Maria’s Comet was filmed on location at the Loines Observatory (Maria Mitchell Association) on Nantucket starring another native islander Skyler Kardell.
