Critical Approaches to Heritage – Reinwardt Academy & Zhejiang University Press

A tour of ZJUMMA, Zhejiang University Museum of Art & Archaeology by a Yale University exchange student.

Newly published Critical Approaches to Heritage: The Reinwardt Academy Exploration of New Boundaries not only serves as a valuable text for students of museology, it is also a celebration of Sino-Dutch cultural friendship.

The Reinwardt Academy’s first ever international Master student happened to be a Chinese national, Mr. An Laishun. A decade after his graduation from the Amsterdam-based university, An Laishun was appointed the secretary-general of the Chinese Museums Association and as vice-president of ICOM.

This complication of critical studies in new museology is translated by Professor Yan Jianyiang and Assistant Professor Hui Zhang, of the Cultural Heritage and Museology Department of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou.

“Critical Approaches” includes the papers from Reinwardt Academy in the last 10 years including discussions and reflections by scholars from the world’s leading universities and research institutions on cutting-edge issues in the field of museums and cultural heritage today. Discussions reflect changes that are taking place in the field of museums and cultural heritage against the backdrop of globalization, urbanization, cultural pluralism, and community participation. The text promises to offer new ideas and strategies for curators, archaeologists, and cultural heritage experts to respond.

Tomorrow, June 13th marks Cultural and Natural Heritage Day in China therefore a timely date to hold a cyber gathering of experts around the themes discussed in this tomb recently published by Zhejiang University Press.
