Gallery Hopping... Nantucket Style
By: Homa T. Nasab
Every weekend, art loving Nantuckters mobilize themselves to attend a series of openings held by
some of the island's most popular galleries & exhibitions spaces. The ritual begins every Friday night, no
later than 6 p.m. Each gallery's vernissage is a minor variation on the theme of art, food, wine and at
times live music. South Wharf and Cavalier Galleries are two such institutions that exhibit international
as well as a number of local artists.
South Wharf Gallery's latest event was an exhibition of a young former Island resident, Megan Hinton.
Hinton's heavily pasty oil paintings depict abstracted views of Nantucket's favorite subject: Seascapes.
After years of experimenting with different methods of interpreting and executing her otherwise mundane
theme, the artist is on the verge of breaking through with an exciting style that is at once gracefully sober
while conveying just the fine hint of anxiety. This mild dosage of restlessness defies her compositions from
turning into numbingly pretty pictures.
Cavalier Gallery, which claims a most prominent place on Main Street Nantucket, carries a number
of internationally recognized artists. Cavalier's most celebrated star is the German-born, American
colorist, Wolf Kahn. A pupil of Hans Hofmann, Kahn's works are included in some of the most famous
public collections including those of: the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the Museum of Fine Arts
(Boston), the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LA).
