Mario Garcia Torres - A Brief History of Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy
Stedelijk Museum

Homa T. Nasab

As a fan of video and performance arts, I have been following Mario Garcia Torres' work for a few years. The young (b. 1975) Mexican born artist began his training in visual arts in his native country at Universidad de Monterrey followed by an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Starting with some of his earliest works such as Historic Reposition (2002-03), Torres shows strong influence of the older generation of conceptual artists including Marcel Broodthaers.

Museo de Arte counts among one of Torres' most aesthetically-inspired dialogues with institutions of art. The Museo's mission as "an attempt to conceive the museum as a discussion forum where art projects are kept and developed" clearly illustrated his process oriented approach to his work. A "living archive for art practices" is how we can also describe the collective archival approach to Torres' “A Brief History of Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy”.

A Brief History is a 7 minute piece-meal of classic movies & artists' videos which were inspired by the famous 9 minute and 43 second episode in Jean Luc Godard's 97 minute long "Bande à part". The French Nouvelle Vague comedy-drama (1964) has inspired a range of filmmakers and video artists: during its celebrated scene, the three main characters attempt to establish a world record by running through the Louvre Museum in nine minutes and forty three seconds. Torres staged an interpretive variation on the same theme in Mexico where museum visitors held a new record for visiting a museum.

Watching this multi-layered event (Torres's video) in one of the great galleries of Stedelijk's temporary site is an experience not to be missed. The raw and transitory nature of the formerly industrial space which displays "only changing exhibitions" conveys an ephemeral museum experience curiously in tune with Museo de Arte.

From the Stedelijk Museum website:

The
Stedelijk Museum building on the Museumplein is currently completely stripped. This has prompted the young Mexican artist Mario Garcia Torres (b. 1975, Monclova) to select it as a place in which to reflect on the role and significance of museums generally...
