On March 25th, 2007, Oxford University art historian and museologist, Homa T. Nasab, will deliver a lecture on the foundations of the National Museum of Afghanistan at the Nantucket Historical Association. The event is part of a week-long celebration of Afghani art, history and culture. One Book One Island’s mission is designed as “a collaborative project of community partners and sponsors on Nantucket which seek[ed] to promote reading, literacy and community by encouraging the entire population of Nantucket to read, discuss, and reflect on the same book.” Nasab will share her extensive research into the formation of the National Museum in Kabul in the main gallery of the Nantucket Whaling Museum. She bases her presentation on an examination of the Kabul Museum’s original catalogue as well as a number of archival and contemporary texts which were published in the 1920’s and ’30’s. Her main focus is to introduce the founding of the Kabul Museum as an example of western style modernization.
