Blast from the Past: Last year, I had the pleasure of visiting what has become one of my favorite museums in the world. I made a point of stopping by the Toy World Museum (Spielzeug Welten Museum) in Basel Switzerland, in late July 2011. The sad mistake that I made was to leave this adventure to the hours prior to my departure from that ancient Swiss city. Mind you (worst still?), this was during my second visit – in eight weeks – to Basel which is best known for its international art fair, Art Basel. The footage that is seen in this video was taken with a mobile phone – since I had run out of space on my camera – from a single installation at this meticulously curated museum which holds one of the leading collections of toys that I have ever seen gathered in one institution. In typical Swiss fashion, the quality (not to mention the quantity) of objects on display are outstanding. What is, however, more impressive is the exquisite degree of attention that is given to every single grouping of objects on exhibit throughout the institution’s massive four stories building. Forget Art Basel, I would return to Switzerland just to spend a week (re)visiting this gorgeous museum where “to play” is rightfully considered a very serious action verb, indeed!
During the coming days, I will publish additional videos and photographs from this memorable museological experience!
